Webster.

Webster.

Back to manual.
Currently there is a webster server on charon, hodge-podge, and snorkelwacker. Administrative details include:
  1. A hesiod entry for ``webster.sloc'' which points to one (or more) webster servers.
  2. /mit/dictionary points to /afs/athena/project/webster
  3. It gets restarted at 4:33 every morning, to save on memory consumption.
  4. There is an entry in /etc/ttys to restart it automatically in case it dies or is killed off.
  5. Webster uses UDP-based Sun RPC as a transport. This means that there isn't an /etc/services entry for it, the procedure number is compiled into the program.
(Much of this can be gleaned from project/office-machines or the sources, and you should look in both of those places to be really sure of the details.)

Starting the Webster Server

  1. Verify that the symlink from /mit/dictionary exists and points to /afs/athena/project/webster.
  2. Obtain root on the server.
  3. Restart portmap by killing it and running /etc/portmap. This should cause websterd, the webster server daemon, to restart itself automagically. If it doesn't, find a wizard.
Where did the dictionary come from? There are legends about this, but some one should know for sure. Note that it is not freely releasable.
